This inquiry project is a case study of four couples enlisted in the United States Navy. The study documents how the couples, though having served a number of years in the military, have not prepared, or seen prepared, for what to do in the case of a catastrophic event. The data gathered through extensive interviews suggest each couple has experienced significant life aid familial stressors as a result of their membership in the armed services. The study concludes with some recommendations for how the military might provide additional supports and opportunities for strengthening communication and psychological security for family members left behind during long deployments.In particular, institutional pressures reinforce the belief that the service member should be focused on his job whether during wartime or training.
