Sertoli cells are highly specialized epithelial cells. They carry out a lot of functions critical for normal spermatogenesis. Numerous important Sertoli cell functions involve constant and dynamic reorganization of actin filaments. mDia1 and mDia2 are implicated in multiple actin-base processes of nontesticular cells, such as cytoskeletal rearrangement, cytokinesis, cell polarization, phagocytosis, and others. mDia1 mRNA has been detected in tissue extracts from whole testis. However, nothing is known about the localization of mDia1 and mDia2 proteins in Sertoli cells and germ cells. Because mDia1 and mDia2 play such a critical role in nontesticular cells, we postulate that Sertoli cells and germ cells possess these proteins as well.
