This dissertation describes how a traditional organic chemistry laboratory was reformed into a guided inquiry laboratory. Data presented illustrate the lack of correlation between the traditional laboratory and the corresponding lecture. After reforming the laboratory, student scores on lecture exams increased, specifically on exam questions directly related to concepts introduced in the laboratory.
