More mathematical concepts are addressed at younger ages as a result of Common Core State Standards. In the 6th grade, students do much more in depth work with geometry, ratio and percentage as well as statistics and probability. This is not the first time these concepts are addressed though. The Common Core approach requires going deeper into content learned in earlier years.
