For the second edition of this volume a number of changes have been made. Elizabeth Gaskellas aOur Society at Cranforda has been added, as has Anthony Trollopeas aA Ride Across Palestine.a Charles Dickens is now represented with two short selections: aThe Story of Little Dombeya and aSikes and Nancy.a The selection of poems by D.G. Rossetti has been expanded considerably (the entire 1870 House of Life sequence is included). Other poets, including Michael Field, George Meredith, and Amy Levy now have expanded selections. A small selection of poems by two key figures who also appear in the anthologyas twentieth century volume (Thomas Hardy and W.B. Yeats) are also now included. Several of the Contexts sections in the volume have been expandedanotably aThe Place of Women in Society, a which now includes material concerning the Contagious Diseases Acts, and aBritain, Empire, and a Wider World, a which now includes a section on the Great Exhibition of 1851. The volume will also include additional visual materialaincluding four more pages of full color illustrations. Inevitably, some selections have been dropped from the bound book; these will all remain available, however, on the anthologyas website component. The most significant change in that direction is Dickensas A Christmas Carol. As well as remaining available on the website, that workalike Hard Times, Great Expectations, and approximately 100 other titles from the Victorian period, is available as a stand-alone volume in the Broadview Editions series, and may be added (at little or no additional cost to the student) in a shrink-wrapped combination package.In a lecture on aThe Name and Nature of Poetrya (1953), the English poet A.E. Housman stated that he could ano more define ... Poems are to be read aloud as well as on the page, and both in sensing meaning and in expressing sound the reader ... We can distinguish such uses of language from the kind of writing we find in, say, a READING POETRY computer usera#39;s manual: the author of the manual.
